Vitamins
Even a diet that is scrupulously planned may not provide one with all the nutrients you need to protect your fertility. Food processing along with environmental and lifestyle factors can rob the nutrients you take in. This is where vitamins and mineral supplements can help.

Although prenatal vitamins is a good beginning, there are some factors in people's lifestyle which may necessitate an increase over and above what your prenatal vitamin provides.

You may need supplements if:

• Your regular diet primarily consists of carbohydrates, processed sugars and artificial sweetened foods
• You eat alot of chocolate, drink coffee, tea or colas
• You smoke
• You drink alcohol
• You live or work in a highly polluted or industrialized area
• You have fibroid tumours, excessive menstrual bleeding or anemia

Megadosing

The practice of using excessively large amounts of vitamins and minerals to treat everything from stress to disease and yes fertility can do much more harm than good. Vitamin B and C are water soluble and leave your body within 24 hours providing they're not grossly taken. A, D and E are fat soluable, toxic effects can easily be developed by them.

• Vitamin A  -
Taken in excess of 25,000 iu daily during pregnancy can increase the baby's risk of bladder malformation, cleft plate, eye damage and webbed fingers and toes
Vitamin D  - More than 10 times the RDA may decrease sexual desire
• VitaminB6 - 2,000 to 6,000mg daily may cause nerve damage
Vitamin C  - 12,000mg or more daily during pregnancy may cause the baby to be born with dependence on this nutrient, leading to scurvy, irritability, pain in arms, legs and bones and muscles
Zinc  - 2,000mg or more daily can cause gastrointestinal distress affecting the balance of other minerals

Always stick to the formulas found in prenatal vitamins and follow your doctor's advice about taking supplements.

Baby Aspirin and Ibuprofen

When administered under the guidance of your doctor, baby aspirin is thought to thin your blood sufficiently to prevent miscarriage by preventing blood clots in the vessels leading to the baby's placenta. Aspirin also keeps your blood flow even and consistent thus may improve the lining of your uterus. Recommended you take one baby aspirin (usually 75mg) daily until pregnancy is confirmed then consult your doctor.

Ibuprofen tablets can cut down the uterine cramping that can sometimes cause you to expel the embryo directly after implantation. Just prior to egg transfer would be the right time to take ibuprofen, but again you should consult the doctor at the clinic where your IVF is to be taken.

L'Arginine

500mg daily is said to improve egg quality and the womb lining. It is one of the 20 amino acids. There are 9 amino acids  which our bodies cannot produce, they need to be supplied by our diet. Some foods contain all the amino acids they are listed below.

• Milk and dairy products            • Lentils and bread
• Eggs                                           • Corn, peas and beans
• Fish                                             • Rice
• Meat and poultry

As you can see animal sources contain all the essential amino acids.
L'Arginine is particularly found in meat, nuts, egg, milk and cheese.

Important Sometimes taking too many vitamins can be as bad as taking too few. Once your pregnancy is confirmed, consult your doctor about which prenatal vitamin and the amount you should be taking.
